My Physicians

CHRISTOPHER ACCETTA, MD

Born in Brooklyn, raised in New Jersey, educated in Pennsylvania, Dr. Accetta graduated from New York Medical College in 1984. He and his wife then began moving south. He completed his residency at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia in 1988. He served as an attending physician at the Charleston Naval Hospital from 1988 – 1991.

Board certified since 1990, he joined Lowcountry Women’s Specialists in 1991 at the end of Gulf War 1.

He is trained in and utilizes robotic surgery extensively. He has a special interest in menopausal disorders and management as well as twin pregnancies.

He has served on the Board of Trustees of Trident Health for 12 years. He has been chairman of the OBGYN section at the hospital as well as the chairman of the Women’s and Children’s Department.

He has been president of the Coastal Carolina Aquatic Association for 10 years. This tri-county summer swim league organizes and oversees competitive swim meets for 23 teams and over 2400 swimmers.

His wife and he live in Goose Creek. They have 3 sons, one who has graduated from Clemson and is pursuing personal trainer certification at TTC, one who is a graphic designer for The National Football League in NYC, and one who is an associate producer and reporter for MSNBC on the Morning Joe Show, also in NYC.

MARTHA COHEN, MD

A native of Macon, Georgia and High Honors Graduate of Macon’s Stratford Academy, Dr. Cohen and her parents spent many holidays and Cooper Bridge Run weekends with close family friends in Charleston.  Upon completing her medical education, she found the commitment of Lowcountry Women’s Specialists to match perfectly her desire to join a professional practice that “takes care of patients for life.” Dr. Cohen is accepting new patients.

Dr. Cohen earned her bachelor’s degree in biology and minor in religion at the University of Georgia and was selected for the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities research program in the department of Cellular Biology. She volunteered for a partnership between the University’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the local school system to encourage elementary students to pursue math and science.

Dr. Cohen earned her Medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine where she was awarded the R. Kirby Godsey and Charles H. Jones Medical Scholarships.   She completed a four year Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program at the Medical Center of Central Georgia/Navicent Health where she served as Chief Resident and received the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine Residency Program Award for Excellence in Obstetrics and the Obstetrics and Gynecology Resident Teaching Award. As a resident, Dr. Cohen served in leadership roles with the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology District IV.

Dr. Cohen’s research has focused on use DaVinci Firefly Scope for ureter visualization and prevention of ureteral injury and on infectious disease transmission in pregnancy.  She has presented on serous borderline tumor, endometriosis, corneal ectopic pregnancies, obstetric critical care, cervical cancer screening, among other topics.

Dr. Cohen enjoys spending time with her husband, J. Slade Edwards, a partner in a Charleston law firm, and her two sons.  She enjoys travel, tennis, boating, cooking, fishing with her husband, and everything about the Lowcountry.

JENNIFER JOHNSON HEINEMANN, MD

Dr. Heinemann is a Board Certified fellow of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Born and raised in Georgetown, SC, she attended the University of SC. Having always wanted to take care of people especially women, she received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. Upon completing her residency at the University of Florida Health Science Center in Jacksonville, she joined Lowcountry Women’s Specialists in 2008, and became a partner in 2009.

Dr. Heinemann specializes in both gynecologic and obstetric care, including endometriosis, infertility, fibroids, and polycystic ovarian syndrome. She is proficient in robotic surgery as well as both medical and surgical treatments for urinary incontinence/bladder leakage. She finds surgery and helping women get pregnant especially fulfilling.

Dr Heinemann lives in Mt Pleasant and enjoys reading, boating, swimming, walking on the beach, yoga, and traveling with her family. She and her husband John have two girls, a boy, and a dog named Jax.

CHRISTINE HUNTER, MD

Dr. Hunter is a seventh generation Charlestonian. She was born at Roper Hospital and raised on James Island, SC. She has always loved the Lowcountry and considers it among the most beautiful areas of the US. Her bio is a story of returning home. She has lived and worked in this area most of her adult life.

Dr. Hunter attended Duke University, graduating with a double major in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering. She returned to the Lowcountry for medical school at MUSC, where she met her husband, Dr. Jairy C. Hunter, of Summerville. During med school, she worked at General Engineering Labs for George and Molly Green, who later founded Water Missions International.

After medical school, she completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Christy again returned home to join Lowcountry Women’s Specialists, where she has worked since 1997. She is Board Certified in Ob/Gyn and is a Fellow of the American College of Gynecology. She has seen the practice and the area grow and change in ways unimaginable over the past 16 years, and she is proud of the work LCWS has done to serve the women and families of the Lowcountry.

Dr. Hunter lives in Summerville with her husband and two daughters, Lily Cate and Ella. The family’s interests include going to the beach, Disney, soccer, ballet, piano and violin. They are active members of East Cooper Baptist Church, and ardent supporters of Charleston Southern University and other non-profit organizations. Dr. Hunter was recently elected to the Board of Trustees of Pinewood Preparatory School in Summerville.

Dr. Hunter’s professional interests include high-risk pregnancy, infertility and minimally invasive robotic surgery, and the management of menopausal symptoms. In addition, she still enjoys delivering babies and working closely with practice employees and her partners. She is happy to be part of a practice with a strong reputation for being leaders in the community.

RONNIE M. GIVENS, MD

Dr. Givens joined Lowcountry Women’s Specialists in 1999 and achieved full partner status in 2001. He practices both Obstetrics and Gynecology and he is accepting new patients. Dr. Givens has significant expertise in the specialized field of robotic and minimally invasive surgery, and his interests include benign gynecologic conditions, as well as routine and complicated obstetrics. He is particularly interested in the management of endometriosis, fibroids, as well as other complex gynecologic surgeries.

Dr. Givens also serves as a da Vinci robotic preceptor, one of only three in the Lowcountry, and helps teach other surgeons around the country how to use the da Vinci robotic surgical system.

Dr. Givens is the Chairman of the Perinatal Morbidity and Mortality Committee, past Chairman of the Department of Women and Children, and is a member of the Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery Department at Trident Health System.

Dr. Givens is married, has two children, and he enjoys traveling, boating, and spending time with his family.

MILES REEVES, MD

Summerville-native, Dr. Miles Reeves joined Lowcountry Women’s Specialists in the Summer of 2021. Dr. Reeves provides comprehensive OB/GYN services, including routine wellness visits, high-risk pregnancy management, and minimally-invasive surgery and obstetrics in both the Summerville and Carnes Crossroads offices.

Dr. Reeves was the Valedictorian of his class at Pinewood Preparatory School, and is a graduate of Clemson University. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mercer University School of Medicine. Dr. Reeves enjoys relaxing with friends and family at home or on the water, golf, fishing, volunteering, and has won multiple karaoke contests. In July 2021, he and his wife India, a nurse practitioner in emergency and family medicine, married, and they made their home in Carnes Crossroads. They have one son who was born in 2022.

Dr. Reeves is the son of longtime Lowcountry Women’s Specialists physician and community leader, Dr. William “Bo” Reeves and Lee Reeves. His sisters Molly and Gracie are both local school teachers.

WILLIAM "BO" REEVES, MD

Dr. Reeves has been practicing in the Tri–County area since 1995. He was born and raised in Summerville, SC. He received a pharmacy degree from USC prior to graduating medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina. While in medical school, he was inducted into the Medical Honor Society, Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his residency at Greenville Hospital System and has been board certified in OBGYN since 1997.

He has chaired several committees at Summerville and Trident Hospitals. He is a member of the Southeastern OB/GYN Society of South Carolina and Dorchester County Medical Society.

Dr. Reeves provides both high risk and normal pregnancy care. He also performs in-office gynecologic surgical procedures, as well as minimally invasive da Vinci robotic surgery at Summerville Medical Center.

Dr. Reeves is married with four children, and a grandson born in 2022. His hobbies include fishing, boating, and coaching youth sports. He has practiced obstetrics and gynecology at our Summerville office since 1995.

HUNTER SMITH, MD

Small town Lowcountry born and raised, Dr. Hunter A. Smith is a proud graduate of Wofford College where he received Bachelor degrees in Biology and Spanish. He then earned his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.

He completed his Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at West Virginia University, where he trained in High Risk Obstetrics and natural labor techniques. While there, he received the Excellence in Minimally Invasive Surgery Award, and was awarded both the AUGS Pelvic Surgery Recognition and Resident Teacher of the Year two years in a row. His professional strengths include Da Vinci Robotic Laparoscopy, High Risk Obstetrics, contraception management, and fluency in Spanish. He serves on the SMC Robotic committee and has a special interest in clinical operations for the practice. 

Dr. Smith feels patient understanding and education is a huge part of medical care, and works hard to make sure his patients know their options, with benefits and risks. He finds helping patients with family issues, and helping to ease the difficulties of health care particularly fulfilling.

Dr. Smith enjoys playing guitar, singing, playing trivia, and participating in outdoor sports. He and his wife Hannah have 2 LCWS boys, and they enjoy traveling together, and spending time as a family with their pet Labrador.
